1 Celadon Game Corner jackpot

The single best value stop in the game. First grab the Coin Case from a man near the Game Corner, then win/buy coins and cash them in.

Getting coins fastYou can buy coins at the counter (50 coins = ₽1,000; 500 coins = ₽10,000 — that's ₽20 per coin) or grind the slots. Also pick up dropped coins: talk to people inside and check the floor tiles — several hand you free coins. Buying is simplest if you've been battling trainers for money.

Prize Pokémon

PokémonCoinsWhy
Abra180Cheap → trade for another Alakazam
Clefairy500Moon Stone → Clefable
Dratini2,800→ Dragonite, a top-tier powerhouse
Scyther (FR)5,500Fast Bug/Flying; → Scizor via trade. LeafGreen offers Pinsir here instead — see Versions
Porygon9,999Rare collector's mon; solid special attacker

Prize TMs

The prize counter also sells the moves that make your team: TM13 Ice Beam, TM24 Thunderbolt, TM35 Flamethrower, TM30 Shadow Ball (plus Iron Tail). These power Nidoking, Lapras, Alakazam, Raichu & Charizard — see Dream Team. Priority buys: Ice Beam + Thunderbolt (they go on multiple mons).

Best pickup hereEven if you buy nothing else, grab Dratini (2,800). Raised to Dragonite (Lv 55) it's one of the strongest Pokémon in Kanto and a genuine alternative team slot.

2 Eevee & the eeveelutions

A free Eevee waits on the rooftop of the Celadon mansion (from the Pokémon Center, go right & up through the trees, into the building's back door, climb to the roof — Poké Ball on the table). Pick your evolution with a stone:

Jolteon
#135
Jolteon
Electric

Thunder Stone. Blazing speed, big Sp.Atk. The pick if you want to out-class Raichu.

Vaporeon
#134
Vaporeon
Water

Water Stone. Huge HP tank; Surf/Ice Beam. Great if you skip Lapras.

Flareon
#136
Flareon
Fire

Fire Stone. Monster Attack — but a shallow physical-Fire movepool in Gen 3. Cool, not optimal.

RecommendationFor this team, make Jolteon (upgrades your Electric slot) or Vaporeon (a second bulky Water). Want all three eeveelutions for the Pokédex? Catch more Eevee later via trade, or breed at the Four Island Day Care.

3 Free fighter — the Saffron Dojo

Clear the Fighting Dojo (top-right of Saffron) and the Karate Master lets you take one for free:

Hitmonlee
Hitmonlee
High Attack, Hi Jump Kick
Hitmonchan
Hitmonchan
Elemental punches, bulkier

Which to pick?

Hitmonlee for raw offence (its Attack is enormous). Hitmonchan if you like coverage (Fire/Ice/Thunder Punch).

Neither makes the core six here, but both are strong Fighting options and a free catch for the Pokédex.

4 Fossil revivals

Ancient Pokémon you revive at the Cinnabar Pokémon Lab. You can only choose one of the Mt. Moon fossils per game — the other needs a trade.

Aerodactyl
#142
Aerodactyl
RockFlying

Old Amber — back room of the Pewter Museum. Fastest revival; Rock Slide/EQ/Fly. best of the three

Kabutops
#141
Kabutops
RockWater

Dome Fossil — pick at Mt. Moon. Strong physical Attack.

Omastar
#139
Omastar
RockWater

Helix Fossil — the other Mt. Moon choice. Great Sp.Atk/Def; Surf/Ice Beam.

Collector tipAerodactyl (Old Amber) is separate from the Mt. Moon choice, so you can have Aerodactyl plus either Kabutops or Omastar in one playthrough. Aerodactyl's Speed makes it the best battler of the three.

5 The elemental move tutor starter buff

On Cape Brink (Two Island) in the Sevii Islands, a house holds a tutor who teaches your fully-evolved starter its ultimate 150-power move — once. Which one depends on your starter:

  • FireBlast Burn — Charizard
  • WaterHydro Cannon — Blastoise
  • GrassFrenzy Plant — Venusaur

It needs a recharge turn, so it's a finisher rather than a spam move — but it hits like nothing else. There are more one-time tutors scattered across the Sevii Islands (e.g. Double-Edge, Body Slam, Thunder Wave, Explosion). Save these for a Pokémon that'll keep the move for good.

6 Trade evolutions

Four Kanto Pokémon only evolve when traded. If you have a link partner (or a second game/console), these unlock some of the strongest mons available:

Trade thisGetWhere to catch the base
Kadabra AlakazamCatch a wild Abra (Routes 24/25, 5–8) → Kadabra
Machoke MachampMachop: Rock Tunnel, Route 10
Haunter GengarGastly/Haunter: Pokémon Tower, Lavender
Graveler GolemGeodude/Graveler: Rock Tunnel, Victory Road
No trade partner?Everything on your core team still works — Kadabra battles nearly as well as Alakazam, and Dragonite/Snorlax/Aerodactyl are trade-free powerhouses if you want to skip trading entirely.

7 Master Ball & key items

Master Ball

Given by the Silph Co. President (11F) after you beat Giovanni there. It's a guaranteed catch — save it for Mewtwo (Lv 70, hardest catch) or the roaming Suicune (which flees every turn and is a nightmare with normal balls).

Rare Candies & hidden items

Rare Candies (instant level) are hidden all over — Rocket Hideout, Silph Co., Victory Road, the Sevii Islands. Use them on your slowest-to-level team member (Dragonite/Snorlax). Many hidden items sit on invisible tiles — an Itemfinder (from Oak's aide on Route 11 at 30 caught) beeps near them.

Wild held itemsSome wilds carry freebies: catch/steal from Chansey (may hold Lucky Egg), and wild Nidoran/others. Bring a Thief user or just catch them. Great free value while filling the Pokédex.

8 In-game NPC trades

Dotted around Kanto are people who swap you one Pokémon for a specific species you hand over. Several are the only way to get that Pokémon in FireRed/LeafGreen — and everything you trade away is caught cheaply nearby.

Outsider PokémonAnything you get from a trade counts as an outsider (its Original Trainer isn't you). Two effects: it earns 1.5× Experience so it levels faster — but it also obeys you only up to a level cap set by your Gym Badges. A high-level traded Pokémon can flat-out ignore your commands until you earn more Badges; with all eight, everything obeys.
Also worth a lookThe gates at the Underground Path (Route 5) and on Route 11 host minor Nidoran-family swaps — trade one member for its counterpart. The exact species offered is version-dependent.

9 Hidden items & the Itemfinder

Plenty of items sit on ordinary-looking tiles with nothing drawn on them. Grab the Itemfinder from Oak's aide on Route 11 (once you've caught 30 species) — it beeps and points when you're standing next to a hidden item. The finds worth a detour:

ItemWhere it's hidden
Rare CandyRoute 9 (north-east corner); Route 12; Cerulean City (in the flowers behind a house near the Gym)
NuggetRocket Hideout, B3F (north-west corner) — sells for ₽5,000
LeftoversRoute 12 & Route 16 (near the sleeping Snorlax)
PP UpCeladon City, Silph Co., Rocket Hideout and Cerulean Cave, among others
Max EtherRoute 10 (beside the Power Plant entrance)
EtherRoute 9 (west end, in the rocks); Route 25 (near the Sea Cottage); the Underground Path
ElixirRoute 25 (north-west of the Nugget Bridge maze)
Everyday pickupsBeyond these, the Underground Paths and most routes hide common restoratives (Potions, Antidotes, Ethers) and many Berries on invisible tiles. Sweep dead-ends and corners with the Itemfinder as you pass through — the free healing adds up.

10 One-time move tutors & Cape Brink

Beyond the elemental starter tutor (section 5), a whole set of tutors each teach one move, one time, then never again — spread across Kanto and the Sevii Islands. Save each for a Pokémon that'll keep the move for good.

Cape Brink ultimate movesThe woman at Cape Brink (Two Island) teaches your fully-evolved starter its 150-power finisher — Fire Blast Burn (Charizard), Water Hydro Cannon (Blastoise) or Grass Frenzy Plant (Venusaur). Like the others it's a one-time teach, and it needs maximum friendship. More on it in section 5.
One shot eachNone of these tutors repeat, so don't burn one on a Pokémon you'll box. Pick recipients that stay on the team.
