Fire Red · Ultimate Team & Secrets
The Dream Team

A six-strong squad to conquer Kanto.

A balanced recommended team that covers every gym and the Elite Four: fully-evolved powerhouses, the right movesets, where to catch each one, and HMs spread so you never waste a battle slot. Not fixed — swap in any of the alternatives lower down.

Philosophy This team covers every gym and Elite Four type, has both a physical and special wall-breaker, and answers Lance's dragons cold. Before you commit movesets, skim the physical/special quirk — it's why Nidoking wants Earthquake and Alakazam wants special moves.

Special sweeper Flyer / HM: Fly

ResistsFire, Grass, Fighting, Bug, Steel; immune to Ground
Rock ×4Rock moves do quadruple damage. Never leave Charizard in against Onix/Golem/Rhydon or any Rock Slide user — switch to Nidoking or Lapras instead.

  • GroundEarthquake — TM26, Viridian Gym

NoteBlazing Speed + Sp.Atk. Frail — it's a "hit first, hit hard" mon.
No trade partner?Kadabra is still excellent unevolved — same movepool, only slightly lower stats. It's a fine team member as-is.

Best moveset

  • PsychicPsychic — TM29, man in a Saffron house
  • GhostShadow Ball — TM30, Game Corner (hits other Psychics)
  • PsychicCalm Mind — TM04, Sabrina's reward (boosts Sp.Atk/Sp.Def)

EvolvePikachu (Viridian Forest) + Thunder Stone
Weak toGround (only weakness)
NoteFast and hits hard, but frail — the team's honest "weak link".
Evolve at the RIGHT timeRaichu learns nothing by level. Let Pikachu learn Thunderbolt (TM24) first, teach the other TMs, then use the Thunder Stone. Don't evolve early.

Best moveset

  • ElectricThunderbolt — TM24 (reliable STAB)
  • FightingBrick Break — TM31 (covers Rock/Normal/Steel)
  • SteelIron Tail — TM23 (hits Rock/Ice)
  • ElectricThunder Wave — cripple fast foes / setup

Stronger alternativesWant more raw power in this slot? Catch Eevee in Celadon and make Jolteon (Thunder Stone) — same role, notably stronger — or slot in Zapdos from the Power Plant. Both are strictly better Electric-types than Raichu.

Type coverage check ✔ Fire (Char) · Psychic (Zam) · Ground/Poison (Nido) · Electric (Raichu) · Normal wall (Snorlax) · Water/Ice (Lapras). Between Ice Beam, Earthquake, Thunderbolt, Psychic and Flamethrower you can hit every type at least neutrally, and most super-effectively. No two members share a weakness that isn't covered by another.

2 HM plan — never waste a slot

Kanto needs 5 HMs to travel. Spread the "good" ones onto your team; dump the junk ones on a boxed HM-mule you swap in only to cross an obstacle.

HMWho carries itWhy it's fine
Fly (HM02)CharizardFlying STAB — an actual good attack.
Surf (HM03)Lapras (or Nidoking)Water STAB — great move on both.
Strength (HM04)SnorlaxDecent Normal move; Snorlax hits hard.
Cut (HM01)muleWeak 50-power move — don't clog a real slot.
Flash (HM05)muleNot a battle move at all.
Best HM-muleA cheap catch like Bellsprout/Oddish, Sandshrew, Spearow or a Diglett/Dugtrio makes a great mule — teach it Cut + Flash + Rock Smash, leave it in the PC, and only pull it out to clear an obstacle. That keeps your battling six at full power.

3 Evolution timing cheat-sheet

PokémonMethodDo this first
Charmeleon → CharizardLevel 36Nothing — just level it. Learns Flamethrower-by-level around then anyway.
Kadabra → AlakazamTradeTrade whenever — no move loss. Evolves on arrival.
Pikachu → RaichuThunder StoneTeach Thunderbolt (TM24) + other TMs FIRST. Raichu learns nothing by level.
Gloom → Vileplume (if used)Leaf StoneLet Gloom learn moves to your taste; stone stops level-up moves.
Eevee → Jolteon/Vaporeon/FlareonThunder/Water/Fire StoneEvolve fairly soon — eeveelutions share Eevee's early movepool anyway.
