FireRed vs LeafGreen

Same adventure — different Pokémon to catch.

The two games share every gym, route, TM and story beat. What differs is a set of version-exclusive Pokémon — ~23 you can only catch in FireRed, ~24 only in LeafGreen. Pick your version below and this page shows what you can catch versus what you'll need to trade for.

1 Kanto version exclusives

How this affects your runAll eight gyms, TMs and the story are identical, so the whole Walkthrough and Reference apply to both games. The only real difference is which wild Pokémon you'll find — most relevant in the Safari Zone (FireRed → Scyther, LeafGreen → Pinsir) and for a couple of team picks below.

2 What it means for your team

If you're on FireRed

  • Vileplume (Oddish line) and Arcanine (Growlithe) are yours to catch — both feature in the team options.
  • Scyther is catchable (Safari Zone / Game Corner); Pinsir needs a trade.
  • Starmie is LG-exclusive — you'd trade for a Staryu. Prefer Lapras or Gyarados for your Water slot instead.

If you're on LeafGreen

  • Starmie (Staryu) is a superb, easy-to-get special sweeper — grab one.
  • Ninetales and Victreebel replace FireRed's Arcanine/Vileplume as your Fire/Grass options.
  • Pinsir is catchable; Scyther, Vileplume and Arcanine need trades.
The Builder is version-neutralThe Team Builder lets you pick any of the 151 — if it suggests one from the other version, just remember you'll trade for it (the whole guide assumes trading is available).

3 Post-game (Sevii) exclusives

Once you reach the Sevii Islands, a batch of Generation-2 Pokémon appear — also split by version:

FireRed (Sevii)

Bellossom (Sun Stone), Scizor (trade Scyther w/ Metal Coat), Elekid/Electabuzz, Wooper/Quagsire, Murkrow, Qwilfish, Delibird, Skarmory.

LeafGreen (Sevii)

Slowking (trade Slowpoke w/ King's Rock), Magby/Magmar, Azurill/Marill/Azumarill, Misdreavus, Sneasel, Remoraid/Octillery, Mantine.

Both versions can also obtain Deoxys (different Forme per version) on Birth Island via the event Aurora Ticket. The Kanto starters, fossils, legendaries and Mewtwo are the same in both games.
